IN-HOME SUPPORTIVE SERVICES (IHSS)

In-Home Supportive Services is a program, which assists low-income, elderly, and disabled adults and disabled children with extraordinary needs for care to remain in their own homes by providing personal care services and/or domestic services. Personal care services include: dressing, bathing, toileting, grooming, help with feeding, and other similar duties. Domestic services include: housecleaning, shopping, cooking, laundry, and other similar duties. IHSS provides consumers independence and choice about their personal care. The IHSS consumer hires, fires, and supervises the care provider.

WHO IS ELIGBLE?

People who are disabled, blind, or 65 years of age and disabled, who are unable to live safely in their own home without help, and are financially unable to purchase the needed services are eligible for IHSS.

IHSS Social Workers determine a person's eligibility for IHSS services. The Social Worker's in-home needs assessment determines which services are needed and how frequently. The Social Worker authorizes, increases, decreases, and terminates services for the IHSS consumer based on "needs assessment" and yearly reassessments. State law establishes the standards for the types of services and the hours of services that can be authorized.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR IHSS?

Consumers, family, friends, physicians, or anyone who has knowledge about a consumer's needs can make a referral to IHSS. To apply for IHSS in San Bernardino County, call:

An IHSS social worker will talk to you about your eligibility for IHSS. When calling to apply, it is helpful to have the following information: social security number, telephone number, income and assets information, and your health information, including doctor's name and telephone number. After this initial telephone screening, an IHSS social worker will come to your home and talk with you about your service needs.
