Provider Training

The IHSS Public Authority helps providers and clients locate a variety of training opportunities in their area. By working cooperatively with several agencies throughout San Bernardino County, we strive to provide a number of diverse options for both the provider and client. We look for a high level of quality in all of our training resources.
 

 Training is an important tool in supporting the daily routine of all care providers. From working safely in the home to proper lifting techniques, the Public Authority can assist in locating training classes that are low cost or in many cases free to all IHSS providers.

 These training opportunities are limited to IHSS clients and providers. To ensure the quality of trainings, class sizes are limited. Click on the links below for the training schedules and register today!


CPR/First Aid

 Providers on our registry are required to have current adult and child CPR/First aid certification at all times. Any provider who fails to attend their training class will be unable to register for future classes and may be subject to termination.
 NOTE: DUE TO BUDGET REASONS, THIS REQUIREMENT HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY WAIVED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

CPR/First Aid Trainings are offered in...
  • Rancho Cucamonga
  • San Bernardino
  • Victorville
  • Yucca Valley
  • Barstow (as needed)
  • Needles (as needed)
  • Trona (as needed)
    •

Classes are offered FREE to all IHSS and Registry providers.

  • Participants will learn the basic principles of Adult and Child CPR and how to work with the victim until emergency crews arrive.
  • Each Student will be issued an American Heart Association certification card that is valid for two years.

All CPR/First Aid classes are 8 hours: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Be prepared to stay for the entire class.
Providers who leave early will not be certified.

National Caregiver Training Program

The National Caregiver Training Program (NCTP) is a 21 hour basic Homecare skills training program developed by Medifecta Healthcare Training. The NCTP is also offered in Spanish and is FREE over a period of 7 weeks. Participants meet 1 time per week for 7 weeks. Trainings are offered in the afternoons from 1pm-4pm throughout San Bernardino County. This course includes the following subjects:

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to attend these classes?

  • Providers on the Public Authority registry are required to attend CPR/First Aid trainings or have a current Adult/Child CPR/First Aid card at all times. Due to budget reasons, this requirement has been temporarily waived until further notice.
     
  • All other trainings are voluntary. Both new and experienced caregivers who have previously attended classes have stated that the classes offer valuable information as well as enhancing their chances of being hired.
When will the CPR/First Aid classes be reinstated?

There is no official date set at this time. We suggest that you log onto this website for any updates or call the Training Information Line on a month to month basis and listen for any changes.

Will these classes help me find employment?

Many caregivers have stated that these classes have enhanced their employment opportunities. If you are on the PA registry, all of the classes you complete will show on each list that is sent to consumers looking to hire caregivers. Clients prefer to hire caregivers who are trained.

Will I receive certification for attending these classes?

Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance for each class they attend. We recommend you assemble a binder with your certificates to demonstrate your learning experiences to potential employers.

What if I can’t attend a class when it is offered?

  • Most Caregiver Training classes are repeated throughout the year, and you will have an opportunity to attend at a later date.
  • If you are scheduled to attend a CPR/First Aid training it is your responsibility to contact the PA office and cancel or reschedule at least one week ahead of time. Failure to do so may result in your being removed from the registry and may affect your ability to register for future classes.

How will I know when a class is offered again?

Call the Training Information Line at (866) 985-6322 and select option 6 to hear a listing of future class dates and times. Flyers are also posted in your local IHSS Public Authority offices.

I am applying to the Public Authority Registry. Am I eligible to attend classes?

  • If you are not available on the registry yet, but you are currently working for an IHSS client, you are eligible to attend classes.
  • If you are a new applicant and are not working for an IHSS client, you are not eligible to attend classes until you have completed the application process and are made Available on the PA registry.

How do I register for classes?
